Since reading about Buddhism in my early 20’s, it’s a philosophy that has always intrigued me and the Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan quickly made its way to the top of my ‘must travel’ list. Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to make this dream trip a reality. This photo was taken during a class at Chimi Lhakhan Monastery, Bhutan. It was the only shot I took on a wide lens before switching to capture details, and this is actually my favourite shot from the day. Children in class, such a normal every day thing that happens all over the world. There is so much that is familiar about this scene, yet so much that’s a world away from my own childhood. Upon arriving at the monastery and seeing these young monks, my first impression was that they are so wise and humble, based purely on the fact that they were dressed as monks. I soon came to realise they are also just kids, like any others from around the world; curious, playful and growing up to fit their cultures fabric. And I couldn’t help but wonder, had I been born here, would I be on the other side of the lens?
